What happened?
On September 8, 2025, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a Federal Register notice announcing the termination of the 2021 Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Venezuela.
Overview:
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem determined that Venezuela no longer meets the legal requirements for TPS after reviewing current country conditions and consulting with interagency partners.
The 2021 TPS designation will officially end at 11:59 p.m. on November 7, 2025, following a 60-day transition period. Venezuelan nationals who received TPS under this designation must prepare to return to their prior immigration status or depart the United States if they have no other lawful basis to remain.
To assist with departure, DHS encourages the use of the CBP One mobile app, which offers:
- A complimentary plane ticket
- A $1,000 exit bonus
- Potential future opportunities for legal immigration
TPS beneficiaries will remain work-authorized through the transition period. Employment and travel documents tied to TPS will expire with the termination.
